I gave up smoking 42 years ago at the age of 23. I was up to two packs of cigarettes a day. I smoked for about ten years from the age of 13. I gave it up because my girl friend (who later became my wife) told me I was killing myself, especially since I was diagnosed with bladder cancer a year earlier.

I really think cigarettes should be made illegal. There is nothing good about smoking them, even in moderation. Only bad outcomes result from cigarette smoking. Some people get spared, but most don't. I know a lot of people are employed in the industry, but that does not outweigh the harmful effects.

BTW, I just went cold turkey without a problem. I chewed some gum and sucked a lot of charms the first week. But I kept on thinking about my health when I was quitting. Quitting was not difficult. You just have to make up your mind.
