An intellectual property dispute, which in this case has resulted in a criminal law conviction by a federal court, is exactly the kind of case where the federal government should be ready to take action to enforce a court order if necessary. If a court awards damages that exceed the value of assets of the offending company, and the offending company then files bankruptcy, it should be the duty of the federal government to secure some form of compensation, and that means more than token compensation.

During several years of work overseas, mainly in southeast Asia, dealing with oriental, culturally based issues, I found that there are ways to reach consensus based resolutions of disagreements. It isn't easy. Diplomacy in these matters requires both art and science – and considerable experience working with others in order to achieve a satisfactory result. One cannot expect good results without these attributes. In particular, if you are dealing with government officials, then some experience in running the government would help immensely.

The experience, skills, art and science of diplomacy seem to be lacking at present, but we'll just have to wait and see.
