PG,

Intel has a 15 to 20% in half the industry...

The 3D chip will help Intel drive home PC sales of the PII (games). They will probably link up with some gamer (through someone like Packard Bell) or all of the gamers will jump on the bandwagon and ride the 3D thing into the summer and fall selling season. The games will help drive hardware sales, but it's the Net that will drive the 3D software sales. The game market is well established and they all use the same tools that they always have. As for 3D on the Web, it's new and tools that help bridge the gap between workstation level 3D and the PC will proliferate.

MetaCreations must makes itself attractive Art Directors as well as Web Designers. These two fields will become blurred. A good, technical oriented AD will have the advantage... design is everything if the tools can take care of the rest (by making the final output Web sensitive (bandwidth)).

The other key area is the Interactive Media Agencies (transformed ad agencies with dollar signs in their eyes). They have the talent for design but lack the Net experience. They also use Macs (this is changing). The Macs are weak on VRML and Java playback. Apple has commited to fix this, but this is the same company that keeps changing its operating system strategy. Oh well...
