X-Ray Man:

Sorry 'bout the delay in replying. You are wrong on several points.

First, the majority of PPC use in the embedded market is in specialized versions where the core is added to different peripherals. This may keep the IBM/MOT factory busy but it doesn't help drive down the cost much in the long run. The best situation is if you can stamp out the same product day after day (a la Intel).

Second, Intel has always had a strategy for meeting the requirements of the high end and the low end. Their high end chips become next years low end, etc. etc. Look at the 486 when it first came out. It replaced the 386 which replaced the 286, etc. Pentium II will displace the Pentium as the next generation chips will displace the current. Intel has the $$$ to keep doing this ad infinitum. Look at all the other guys in the processor business. Mot ran out of steam on the 68x. MIPS is almost in the grave. Alpha almost there too. Only the combined resources of Apple/Mot/IBM has survived. How long can the threesome continue. Mot the IBM are already fighting it out in the embedded market. How long can they keep going on Apples shrinking volumes ??
You can have the greatest chip ever created by man, but if you don't have the volumes, you can't compete. Sub-$1000 will squeeze Apples' nuts. If the sales don't drive their chip volumes, their margins will go down the tubes.

Third, SGI still has some great technology. The Octane workstation blows away the fastest Macs and PCs. It's memory bus is much more advanced then the lowly MACs and PCs. Use this technology in the next generation MAC. Apple should follow its own marketing slog and "Think different".

Lastly, It doesn't matter what Apples does anyway. Microsoft has the rights to license anything they develop. Anything usefull in Rhapsody 98 will be in Windoze 99.
