I thought Obama was a fine president, but getting him in the spotlight again would just give Trump a hate-target for his haters, and allow him to whip them up. I think even Obama knows this. I think Obama just misread America and pushed social justice a little faster than most Americans were ready for. I sensed this when the POTUS began musing over what bathroom a transgender person should be allowed to use.
