Eons ago (30+ years?) there was a cartoon of a reporter polling a beer guzzling slob with, "What do you think is the cause of public apathy?" Answer: "I don't know and I don't care!" Selling one's soul has nothing to do with it. Many people are numb, and many more are just too angry.
