Well, normally people always have to go through one complete crash before they decide to install a backup device or at least take a look what HDD they had. Luckily for me, I had my Tchernobyl disaster about 10 years ago already. Since then I make regular backups of all critical data. Has helped me quite a bit on many occasions already. In my mind, it's never a question whether the HDD will fail one day, but only when. My brother recently bought himself a new HDD from Fujitsu 3.3 Giga or so. Freshly out of the box, plugged into his PC, it failed after 10 days already!! Now he's got another Fujitsu, same model; he says it's working fine for 6 weeks now. I once had a Seagate 450 MB that always sounded awful right from the start. It broke quickly after 2 months or so. At least they exchanged it without a fuss. I'm still working with the replacement 450MB (the new PC should arrive next week). I'll tell you folks about my experience with the new WD 6.4 GB then. How old was your Maxtor before she broke now? What model/capacity? Thomas
