Samsung and Apple are playing catch up and will have esim in 2019 - but as far as impacting carriers, I suspect it is a non-event. It is not hard to swap sim cards today. Numbers can be easily and quickly ported between carriers. However most people are either happy with their carrier or too lazy to switch.

Esim will be a non event as it comes to phone companies
