You make some good points and these are things Apple, as well as the whole AIM alliance, must look at. However, right now I'm finding it interesting that Apple is doing well by returning to their historical model, ie having the Mac market to itself, and having high margins.

It seems reasonable to me that margins will stay good, especially due to the slimmed-down product line and the upcoming higher-end models, plus a refreshing of the PowerBook line.

Looks like a $1.5 billion quarter would lead to a $20 million profit, plus interest income. Apple usually has a bigger pct. revenue decline
from Dec. Q to March Q. so it could be difficult to reach $1.5 B. It might depend on whether Apple can ship their high-end systems early enough in March or not. It's similar to how the 8600s and 9600s in June saved that quarter.
