Vetting in the old days was restricted to checking for diseases. Sorry, I should have said nativist or zenophobist, not racist. Let’s start border control by eliminating the H1 visa program, which results in immigrants stealing jobs that Americans would be happy to fill. But that won’t happen because we are addicted to the benefits of cheap labor. Undocumented immigration would not happen if we didn’t have a huge number of low skill jobs that immigrants are much happier doing than native born Americans. That has always been the impetus for immigration, legal or not. By making large scale i migration (hat we need to fuel our economic engine) illegal we stigmatize hard working people looking for a better life. The long que you refer to is a byproduct of the absurdly low levels of legal immigration allowed by current law.
