Turns out that anyone who is in the United States can request asylum no matter how they arrived.
A convenient loophole for those caught sneaking into the country illegally. I doubt any normal American would accept that as the intent of asylum seekers.

The government is adding a requirement that is not in the law, that asylum will only be considered if entry has been done through legal channels.
