Rarebird is spot on. This isn't about the Ugly American, it's the revelation that this is actually what the vast majority of Americans believe.

I consider Bourdain an example of what an American can strive to be as a person interacting with other cultures.

BC... I am just astounded by how many really ugly Americans there are.

And I absolutely loved everything about Bourdain, I am so sad that he gave in to his demons. I wholeheartedly believe that
travel changes people, and gives them far more empathy... but there will always be knuckleheads that remain oblivious.

Bourdain mentions in that piece the soup lady in Vietnam, my wife and I have known her since 2001, so great to see her business blossom (she is a joy, and yes, her soup is incredible...one choice, something different everyday). We've been doing non-profit work in Vietnam since 2002, first building safe water wells, then expanding to help with schools for the minority tribal people in the Central Highlands. It's been incredibly rewarding...and successful!
