It affects all companies involved in DVD. There is a competing format called Divx. It will be available this summer, and sold by Circuit City. Divx players will play DVD discs, but DVD players sold today won't play Divx discs. Many people, especially myself, believe that Divx will die quickly as public sentiment is against it already, and it isn't even available yet. The prospect of a competing format may be affecting sales, but DVD sales are ahead of where CDs were in the same period of time.
For further info, type Divx into the search engine below, and specify full text search.
Oh, and there are competing standards for recordable DVD, but it is not likely that these will be priced for mass market sales (like at Wal-Mart) anytime soon.
CUBE, however, is not just a DVD company. Check the CUBE website for further info, and feel free to read the several thousand posts on this thread.
