You need to watch the program to get him and understand the development of his ideas. He was not writing idle self-contained pieces. For example, in his 30-page manifesto, he has praises for capitalism and later in life (much after he wrote Das Kapital) he was speculating in the stock market.

Long story short - he actually was pushing for human and social freedom. One of his key points was that what distinguishes humans from animals is that humans can produce whatever they want. He objected to the industrial machinery that turned humans into robots that did only one thing. When you look at what was going on in factories and farms during that time, his point was valid.

His main mistake (or perhaps premature) was that he believed we could analyze social events and society with the same precision that a chemist can manage chemical-chain.

Anyway, I found the series interesting. I had of course, known of their philosophies, but the series put that knowledge in a different light.
