Geron Exec: Doesn't Know When Co. Will
Mkt Telomerase Pdts

Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Geron Corp.'s (GERN) chief scientific officer said that
although the company hopes to use the enzyme telomerase to treat many
age-related diseases, it doesn't know when it will develop and market related
products.

On Tuesday, Geron announced it had extended the lifespan of normal
human cells using telomerase in a study at the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center.

Geron has said its study showed that the introduction of an active
telomerase gene into normal mortal cells lengthened telomeres and
increased the lifespan of the cells, making the cells potentially immortal.
Telomeres are a chain of repeated DNA segments found at the ends of the
chromosomes.

"We are very excited about the commercial potential of this gene," said
Calvin Harley in an interview on CNBC. "It's very difficult - the drug
discovery and product development process does take a long time.
However, a number of these applications are shorter-term."

The enzyme could control age-related skin disorders, some types of
blindness and cardiovascular disease, but that doesn't mean it will increase
the maximum lifespan of a human, which currently is about 120 years,
Harley said.
