Notice how the entire line for the United States resides in the top portion of the graph? That’s because the entire country is relatively rich. In fact, America’s bottom ventile is still richer than most of the world: That is, the typical person in the bottom 5 percent of the American income distribution is still richer than 68 percent of the world’s inhabitants. I'm aware of the fact that there are even poorer people in the rest of the world. I hope this doesn't mean that we really don't need to help our own poor in this country. Maybe you are saying that any help for our poor should actually go to the poor in other countries because they are so much more worse off. How much should we help our own poor before we help the rest of the world?
