China gets the benefit of the doubt in Africa because they have no history there. It's very different when you look at how they are viewed by ASEAN countries. And China is learning the hard way that they need to operate their Belt-and-Road initiatives as a European country would and not cut around social/regulatory processes even if/when they have a willing partner in the government. Human nature being what it is, I find it more likely than not that China will mess up its African relations.

All that said, I don't disagree that China has a more positive image in the developing world, but not so much because of their policies as because of lack of negative history with their partners.
