M6.1 + M6.4 EARTHQUAKES ROCK EAST INDONESIA JULY 28, 2018 CAP ALLON M6.4 QUAKE HITS MOUNT RINJANI, INDONESIA A strong and shallow earthquake M6.4 hit the Lombok region of Indonesia at 22:47 UTC (06:47 local time). Initial reports indicate 10 fatalities and many buildings destroyed. The quake struck near Mount Rinjani volcano. The seismic uptick in that area of late has officials concerned of an imminent awakening of the volcano. The surrounding area has now been closed off. Rinjani volcano has a recent VEI history of between 2-3 but a confirmed VEI 7 took place during the Wolf Minimum. The USGS is reporting a depth of 7.5 km (4.6 miles) for the quake. 103,000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking, 865,000 strong, 2 375 000 moderate and 5 671 000 weak. The USGS issued a yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities. M6.1 QUAKE HITS FLORES SEA, INDONESIA Earlier on Sunday morning, a M6.1 earthquake rocked off east Indonesia’s Flores Island, the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency said. The quake struck at 01:07 local time. The epicenter was 115 km Northwest of East Nusa Tenggara’s East Flores Regency with a depth of 596 km under the sea. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) downgraded the magnitude to 6.0 with a depth of 578.5 km. No tsunami warnings have been issued.
