I'll let you have the last word - almost.

On the other hand, since LeBron is a big name sports figure, what he said on CNN was being publicized (even on Fox) before the President's Tweet response. (The first I heard of it was how LeBron said he "wouldn't sit down with the President.)

I think the President did the right thing because now those who accepted LeBron's vicious diatribe on face value, have an alternative opinion to consider.
