No question about poor math skills be disturbing. Poor spelling is a distant cousin to poor grammar. I worked with a retired English Major long ago. He would often lament the deterioration of skills with our language. I often note things he mentioned. Things like "they're, there, their". Erroneous exchange of "our" and "are" (currently heard repeatedly in the USPS commercials), and the same with "then" and "than". I could go on, but my friend's conclusion was that these things probably aren't properly taught, combined with an "I don't care" attitude by far too many.
