Yes, EMP's are the big worry. A large detonation about 50 miles above the US would take out the electrical grid. Imagine large cities like New York, San Francisco, LA with no electricity for 6 months or longer-no lights, elevators, water, refrigeration. 10's of millions of people would quickly die.

It is also possible that a large solar flare could do the same thing. There was one large enough earlier this year to take out the global power grid, and luckily it was not earth facing. So far, there has only been "talk" about planning for such an event, or "hardening" the grid, but it never gets the attention it deserves.
