Nobody changed the rules so that Trump could get elected.

If all the left leaning States give all the EC votes to the winner - but other states that say are purple don't - is that fair? Doesn't that give more power to the left leaning States - the exact thing the EC was meant to prevent?

I get it people on the left want to change the rules (so they win) - and changing them as long as they are completely fair is a good thing. But playing games in some states to get the outcome a specific group wants is a guarantee for a counter reaction. Change them all or leave things alone.
