Well, McDs changed to paper in UK this year.

I don't really know how many others have done the same.

The reality is the plastic lids on soft drinks don't have a good paper replacement; we used plastic in our family business since I was a child. But there are suitable paper replacements for coffee cups/lids.

I think if you build a machine to insert paper lids into paper cups 1/4" from the top, a simple groove in the cup would do. I've never seen that, but it wouldn't be hard to manufacture. A hole for a paper straw and you're good. But you can't really have people handling the rim of the cup without gloves today and that creates another problem, so a simple machine to insert a lid is necessary.
