When might there be layoffs? I don't know. The timing of such an announcement if it were ever made would be in conjunction with a very bad quarterly report. I do not think this is something they would do unless they really had to. They need a shakeup in their sales department. The Novonyx announcement means that Novell's sales force has to sell the web server. Can they do it? That is where senior management ought to focus like a laser beam. You cannot get to be a leading Internet company unless you can show that you can take superior products (Netscape's web server on Novell's NOS) and sell them. They need goals, quotas, sales plans, and strategies. Every webmaster should be aware that the Novonyx product exists. Novell has two products to hit the NT market with to open the door (BorderManager cache and NDs on NT). They should be doing some sales calls and inviting webmasters at corporations to try the Novonyx combination. Biggestmistake Novell could make is to just send the sales force out to sell the existing base. They have to go out to NT customers and show them the better product. ITs an attitude problem at Novell. They have to learn to sell around and under MSFT.
