My take on the Novonyx deal

First I need more information to confirm that the company will be re-adsorbed. Let's assume it is true.

Novell's stated goal is to be an Internet leader.
To be an Internet leader you have to have a leading Internet product.

Web servers fit that category as products.
Novonyx initially gave Novell the opportunity to level the playing field with Netscapes web server on NT.

However was Novell's goal to make its best selling Internet product the property of Novonyx? Sounds to me like the guy that sold DOS for 75K to MSFT.

So they re-adsorb Novonyx and do a deal with Netscpae directly. As long as this deal results in Netscape's web server coming out on Netware 5.0 just as rapidly as on top of NT4.0 then I see it as a win.
Because it will be a superior product. They will be able to show every PC magazine and webmaster the stats (I hope!).

Schmidt doesn't have the problem of being unable to communicate with Netscape senior management. I'm sure he knows these people.

Its more tightly integrating a leading product under senior management supervision.

I can't see any negatives to the move.
Can you?
