Vet - Frankly, I don't think that the US taxpayer should assume the risks for any private enterprise. Let the markets sort out the price of goods without intervention. Unfortunately, loan guarantees, subsidies, import restrictions, etc are prevalent in most economies. Americans pay higher prices for sugar to protect US sugar producers. We also subsidize corn growers through laws requiring the dilution of gasoline with ethanol. Agricultural products are extremely heavily subsidized in Japan. The Canadian govt subsizes mining companies through the extension of "gold loans", etc.
If your point is to prove what a rotten bunch we are in the USA, you are welcome to your opinion. Console yourself with the thought that the US is the source of all evil. The rest of the world is perfect, especially Canada.
