(1) the major ERP vendors do not bundle a database at no charge - a customer needs to buy one, they have a choice of a limited use run time they can buy from the database companies which is usually heavily discounted (lets say 60-70%) or a full use license. Many companies buy a full use license since at some point they will need to use the data generated by the ERP applications to create a datawarehouse or manipulate it in some other way, So ERP sales generate current and lots of future business for Oracle. Since the vast majority of ERP salesfrom SAP, BAAN and Peoplesoft are on Oracle - its an easy way to generate future sales for Oracle as Oracle consulting, education, etc. follow the database.

(2) there is a cyclical slowdown for databases but as their functionality improves it will pick up again. What facet of any industry is immune to this?

(3) i havent heard anything about vp of sales leaving - plus Oracle has a lot of them, as they divide themselves into "virtual companies" - i.e - Telco, healthcare, datawarehousing.

(4) oh my - talk about the phrase a little bit of knowledge....
you are mistaking booked revenue with quota credit. Oracle books the actual revenue - however different people will get quota credit - in fact if a reseller was involved the Oracle employee who managed the reseller would get quota credit as well but Oracle does not inflate revenue by 3x times. Oracle is very religious about revenue recognition because of the problems they had in the early 90's.

(5) who knows. maybe your on to something here.
