Mitsubishi Electric Develops Battery For Mininotebook PC
January 15, 1998

Nikkei English News via Individual Inc. : TOKYO (Nikkei)-- Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) and GS-Melcotec Co., a Mitsubishi Electric and Japan Storage Battery Co. (6931) joint venture, have developed a thin, rechargeable lithium-ion battery for Pedion, Mitsubishi Electric's ultrathin notebook.

A U.S. manufacturer had been supplying Mitsubishi Electric rechargeable, sheet-type, polymer-lithium-ion batteries for its notebook PCs. Manufacturing difficulties have limited battery production, however, creating a backlog at Mitsubishi Electric of about 6,000 units.

Mitsubishi Electric is pushing to have its U.S. supplier increase production, but has also begun purchasing the new batteries from GS-Melcotec which began manufacturing in January. GS-Melcotec plans to double monthly production to 8,000 units by March.
