We have a solar system with a 120 gal storage tank. Today, a sunny day, that tank is full of 170 degree water. On a day like today, the water coming down from the collectors is about 190 during the initial flow of the circulating pump cycle.

There is a mixing valve at the the storage tank outlet that mixes cold water with the 170 degree water to bring it down to 130.

That makes the effective size of the tank something like 150 gallons.

That water flows to a Takagi demand propane heater.

The Takagi knows what temp the incoming water is, and only fires if the incoming water is below 130.

If that's the case, and it fires, it only puts enough heat into it to get it up to 130 at its outlet.

The system has been running for about 5-1/2 years now, and still looks and operates as it did when new.

Having a big storage tank of solar-heated water with a propane backup provides a very economical high capacity system.
