Yes, indeed, much of what you say makes sense.

If you haven't watched or read anything by Dr. Victor Davis Hanson I can certainly recommend him.
He's an accomplished historian and an authority on the history, and ramifications, of war.

Here's a Youtube video of him talking about one of his books, "A War Like No Other". This 27 year war took place centuries ago, but Hanson informs us of the many similarities that exist today with regard to why wars were fought then and now ....

If a country doesn't want itself to be an easy target, or a pushover, by a likely aggressor, it better have a good, in-house DETERRENT such that the aggressor will immediately conclude that it would be a BAD IDEA to ever contemplate any war ....
That's why it's a good idea, IMO, to do what Donald Trump is doing with the budget for America's defense ... America may never use its military might, BUT if it has it then it wields a BIG STICK should any third party get "clever ideas" ......
