>fishing with dynamite< A funny story

When my great granfather was 14 his father died leaving a wife and 9 children.

He was the oldest son and in order to feed the family did a great deal of dynamite fishing on the St. Lawrence. Deep channel work for walleye & catfish during the day from a raft.

He would also work the shallow water night shift for Sturgeon who came into the bays to feed.

At the time Massena NY was a small village and the local judge understanding the situation let him off without a fine on several ocassions for fishing with explosives.

Word has spread and by this time, and he was not only proving food for the family but selling the excess for a tidy profit. A poor boy peddling Caviar.

He became friends with a young Mohawk from Akwesasne (a reservation close by) and they had great sucess also spearing sturgeon in the shallow waters, ...then legal-I think:)

...these fish sometimes were over 10 ft long and the wounded fish would drag the boat up and down the St. Lawrence for the entire night before being brought aboard or breaking free.
