You're both right. I wrote an image-editing program that took a very old photo of Avalon Bay and converted it to what you saw earlier. I've been experimenting with it, and sometimes I get some mesmerizing effects. This one was interesting to me because it's almost ghostly. So, the good news for me is that the image was recognizable. The bad news: "a weird picture of a harbor". Hmmm...
