Intel Backs Zenith's Digital TV Modules

Jack Robertson

The strange-bedfellows partnership between Intel Corp. and Zenith Electronics Corp. intensified at last week's Consumer Electronics Show '98 in Las Vegas, where the chip giant touted the TV set company's digital-TV electronic modules. As a member of the Grand Alliance, a consumer-electronics consortium, Zenith had been a champion of a consumer television as opposed to a PC-like television. Lately, according to sources, Zenith has decided that the PC-like digital TV is a much larger market for its digital-TV demodulator cards and display-format chip sets than the expensive high-definition television consumer-oriented sets. Zenith, Glenview, Ill., is a unit of LG Electronics Inc.
