Mike, There has been a bit of stuff in the popular press lately about microclusters. None of which indicate they are hard to assay or arise in the wild. Neutron activation assay will get all elements that will add neutrns to give a radioisotope, and gold and plat do that. The presence of other elements that might shield this when present in big amounts is allowed for by prior sample preparation. The same for X-ray fluorescence, all interfering elements can be eliminated and accurate assays performed. The big problem with thos methods is they are expensive to equip for(so they can be done in house) or to pay a lab so equipped to do. A nickel sulfur fusion with subsequent atomic absorption assay is well over $100 per sampls US$. Since an in house fire assay can be done for easy gold for under $2 in raw materials and needs only a an accurate torsion balance and a furnace to go to the assay temp I can see why they want to adapt a fire assay for refractory materials. What they should do is the nickel sulfur fusions in house part way, and then send the prepped samples to the AA lab. They could fuse it with the nickel and sulfur according to the lab spec and then digest the sample according to the spec, all of which takes time and labor. Then send the extract to the AA lab after you precipitate the obscuring trouble elements. That way you can in house a part of it. Still takes 30 days, unlike a FA which can be done in a few hours.
So they should get some nickel fusions done to nail down the real content of the stuff, and then try the monged fire assays until they get the same amount. I can understand not doing a nickel sulfur on a 1000 foot hole, every two feet is 500 samples at $150 per is $75,000.

So the big problem is getting a cheap accurate assay. They have expensive accurate assays and they should be able to do a few of those to make the ASE and reporters shut up and go away.
