"It doesn't cost a cent to use the analog portion of the ISDN spectrum. I can stay connected to the 'Net all day with a K56 or X2 MODEM for my $19.95 ISP monthly flat fee. To the phone company, this is a free, "local residential call"."

This is not always true. BellSouth counts the time used on pots lines plugged into the back of your TA as time spent vs. its allotment of 200 hours per month. Luckily, I haven't hit this limit.
Also, if your ISP (sur)charges for the 2nd channel, the ZyXel Omni series of TAs is a better product since it provides for Bandwitdth on Demand (BOD). The 3Com Impact does not have this feature. Connecting at 2B and having to stay there where surcharges apply can ramp up your costs tremendously.
