Steve:
What you had done sounds like the standard open procedure called anterior acromioplasty, resection of the lateral end of clavicle, and rotator cuff repair. There is other arthroscopic surgery with less pain which can sometimes be done.

After such surgery, rehab is very important to prevent stiffness and relieve pain. We usually use a shoulder CPM (continuous passive motion) machine a day or two after surgery 2hrs. on and 2hrs. off during the day and gradually increase the range of motion with the goal being to achieve full range of motion and also this has the added benefit of relieving pain. It not only keeps the joint healthy and prevents adhesion formation but also promotes healing and guarantees full return of motion while relieving pain at the same time. Most patients love these machines. The rep comes to your home and sets it up on a chair and shows you how to use it. The machine is computerised and easy to program and use. It has become very popular in the last 5 years!
After 6 weeks of using the CPM you should be ready for more agressive rehab starting with active-assistive ROM and then active ROM and finally strengthening exercises. Most patients do extremely well and are very pleased with the results.

Have a blessed evening.

Nathan.
