Something doesn't not smell right about this.... INFN has publicly and repeatedly stated that developing in house DSP's only made sense in certain situations- You have ACIA spending oodles of R&D $$$ on 400g Dsp's and Ciena opened up the sale of their DSP's in a licensing situation in an apparent capitulation to ACIA - If INFN is in fact losing to Ciena, the reason MKM gives does not seem to make sense, which throws up a red flag- If everything is moving toward open and dissagregated, you will see a more multivendor cannibalization with more merchant DSP silicone and less closed proprietary. Each vendor would then spend less R&D on DSP's instead of continually re-inventing their own in house DSP's which would be bad for open and very costly for the industry as a whole. INFN made a choice to not aggressively spend on DSP's across the board and only develop in house when they could not buy what they needed. If the move toward open and disaggregated happens, it was the right decision- If not, the move will look like "disgusting Incompetence" - INFN has made up the shortfall of the loss of CTL's business with metro and DCI- If everything stays closed and proprietary instead of all these closed systems being cannabalized by open systems, INFN, Coriant, will be rightly deemed "disgustingly incompetent"- but we will see-
