Lam Research, Western Digital stocks fall after Mizuho downgrades

Published: Oct 1, 2018 8:32 a.m. ET

Shares of Lam Research Corp. LRCX, -0.33% are down 0.5% in premarket trading Monday while shares of Western Digital Corp. WDC, -0.03% are down 1.1% after Mizhuo analyst Vijay Rakesh downgraded both stocks to neutral from buy due to NAND concerns. "We believe NAND ASP (average selling price) pricing will continue to decline at a low-double digit rate through 1Q19 and a high-single digit rate through 2019," he wrote. "At WDC, we believe the current consensus for flat gross margins could see significant downside." He believes that NAND fabs and capital expenditures are being pushed out, which could hurt Lam. Shares of Lam are down 18% over the past 12 months, while shares of WDC are off 32%. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.70% has gained 16% in that time, as the PHLX Semiconductor Index SOX, +0.87% has climbed 17%.
