The Tranz Enabler is not patented and they haven't applied for a patent to my knowledge. The Tranz credit card units are made by Verifone, the leader in the industry and the "Enabler" name is unique to USWDA; their box enables the Verifone Tranz box to work wireless.

I have heard that they expect to get some more exclusive agreements in place "any day now". Of course, that is the same promise that has been made for the past six months but is yet to come about.

Some competition could be good because it could spur adoption fo the approach. However, the competition that is entering the market has much deeper pockets and advantageous market position compared to USWDA. They need to make things happen quickly or their brainchild will get washed down with the flood of competitors products.

VARS can make a lot out of the Metricom product that you can do with the USWDA technology. This approach uses standard internet communications protocals combined with secure encryption. What this means to a merchant, cab driver, trade show vendor, etc. operating in a remote store or field location is that they can use the same connection to communicate e-mails, check inventory, report sales, etc. via the internet. The system can be tied into a centralized order-entry or POS system via the "extranet".

The merchant can buy the Metricom Tranz enabler modem and he gets 24 hour wireless internet connection for free.
