Tesla with Auto pilot engaged vs Tesla w/out Auto pilot engaged is perhaps a 'better' comparison.


People choose when to put AP into operation and I would wager that they do so in the easiest situations. I doubt that most do so when driving around the downtown of a major city or when in the middle of a blizzard. We need more granular data to get good comps.

The companies wont put the data out themselves. That should be a requirement made by the states or the federal government. Minimal regulation of self driving cars is the right way to go because I dont think there is a good way to prove out these cars except in real world situations. Ultimately, getting the cars driving well and out in the market will save the most lives.

However, the price for that speed should be transparency to allow consumers and regulators to judge the safety of self driving cars and the progress.
