They're afraid of competition for something they don't believe in but in case it works they want to protect their already sizable investment. This strategy is a mistake. Tends to throw good money after bad. Management knows it, but what can they do at this point but make the best of the situation. They'll never admit this to the public and they'll deflect any issue the analysts may raise by project diffusion and obfuscation.
