They were beginning to open up with just a little capitalism. They had the beginnings of liberty. China was very different from 1997 to 2017. But recently, President Xi pronounced himself President for Life and has been systematically tightening the noose on liberty there. Cameras on every street corner. Facial recognition. Google building a Chinese Search engine that ties search parameters to individuals and their phone numbers and location, so that anyone can be arrested just for their web activity. There are all sorts of liberty destroying activities going on in China now and American companies like Google are in the center of it.

The Internet was a force created to bring liberty to the world, but now that corporations have harnessed its power, it will be the force that enslaves us all....unless our laws and our government catch up to technology and ensure our Constitutional rights are guaranteed by corporations and any use of the Internet, as well as that our Constitutional rights are extended towards the actions American companies take in other countries. It's really a simple request with important ramifications for humanity. Do no evil.
