Hi everybody, I was rudely awakened at 1.10 a.m. CST to attend to a Sun server which was having problems. That's my job, Unix System Administrator. Fortunately, I'm only on 24 hour call once every six weeks. Anyway, it only took me about 30 minutes to fix the problem, but now I'm awake I'm catching up on SI posts. BTW, we support Sun, IBM and HP UNIX servers where I work. One major difference from a sys admin point of view between these three is the differnce in time it takes for a system to boot up. The Sun system I had to reboot tonight took about two to three minutes to be fully up and ready again. Incidentally, it was a disk problem. Comparable HP's take about 10 minutes and IBM's take about 20 minutes. This may not seem like a terribly big deal unless, like me, you are awakened and have to work on one of these systems in the middle of the night. Anyway, just a little trivia for those of you interested. We sys admins do get the ear of our bosses occasionally and this could definitely be a factor in future purchase decisions. FWIW, I hope SUNW closes at 40 tomorrow so my shares don't get called away from me, but if they do I'll be looking to buy them back at what I consider to be the first opportune time. |
