Here's why I think the questions of whether the new hires are additional folks or replacements of existing engineers is important:

If they're new hires, adding to the number total of engineers, that is bullish - it means management perceives an opportunity, and work towards the goal should be acceleratring. Management wouldn't increase their burn rate in such tenuous times unless they thought the payoff would be pretty soon.

If they're just replacing folks who have left, that's bearish. It means some people think the potential is better elsewhere, and that the overall level of experience is diminished, as experienced people leave and are replaced by less experienced folks (at least in the fonix system).
