The other aspect of a ro;; down is that you may lower your overall cost even if it is a debit. For instance if the debit is quite a bit less than the strike differential .

Comfort with the underlying is the key and if you are building a position then it makes sense to just take the assignment. Writing ITM puts may also make sense.
