10/19/2018 Contest update
Standing in Times Square looking up at the giant electronic stock ticker I cheered as I watched the Dow plunge 800 points. Yippee, Trump won’t have a booming stock market to brag about any more. Then I realized I’m losing lots of money. Oh well, you can’t win them all.
Meanwhile, although there were a few notable exceptions, biotechs had a miserable time since my last Contest update. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was only up 2.00% YTD (vs. up 13.99% YTD two weeks ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 4.18% YTD (vs. up 9.26% YTD two weeks ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up .58% YTD (vs. up 6.78% YTD two weeks ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) was up 7.90% YTD (vs. up 12.82% YTD two weeks ago).
THID’s portfolio, up 78.81% YTD, took a beating but remained in first place. Also getting slammed were second place KMASTR’s portfolio, up 67.10% YTD and third place, KEOKA’s portfolio, up 66.73% YTD.
At Friday's close, just 35 of the 62 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 30 beating the NBI and 34 beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of merely .12% and a median YTD loss of -14.95%, with just 91 showing a gain for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the past two weeks ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: MRNA symbol change to ATRX & name change from Marina Biotech to Adhera Therapeutics.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe and relaxing fall weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
