Good morning, Fred,

I'll ask a good friend to ask the engineers at work about SGI/SUN.
It may be that they cater to different markets, although there is probably some overlap. I don't know. I do know that Sun's clientle is extremely loyal, and has stood by the company when they were having hard times.

The unix operating systems that Sun and SGI use are considered the professional standard. As far as I know Sun and SGI's micrprocessors are faster than the Pentium. Sun and SGI may make their own processors. I don't know.

Intel is a fine company. I own shares in it as well as SGI and SUN.
I am not sure what operating system these new Pentium workstations use. From what I've been told the Pentium workstations are cheaper, but they are not in the same league as SGI and perhaps SUN.

I don't think it is a situation where only one company can or will win. Companies and institutions do not all have the same needs.
For special effects, a movie company would probably use SGI, because it needs top-notch graphics. On the other hand, a small company that is trying to cut costs, and does not need high-end graphics would probably choose Intel.

There will always be a need for a high-end market and a low-end market. For instance, some people will want a Lexus while others will prefer a Camary. I imagine that's pretty much the case with computers.

Fred, I don't work in the computer industry so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the information about SGI's home page. I'll try and look at it tomorrow.

Best wishes,
