They could have, but this was a polarized race. There were a few R's that distanced themselves from Trump, which does make them look more moderate, but then that tamps down enthusiasm among Trump supporters to come out and vote for them. So those R's who distanced themselves found themselves losing to a more enthused D base. That's my opinion. I have not statistics to back this up, though. Bottom line is that when the country is polarized, you lose by distancing yourself from a pole. I wish it were different, but that's life. I wish wholeheartedly that we had a centrist party, like the libertarians, but viable and big enough to win against the Ds and Rs. They'd get my vote.
