I have understood that Jesus' birth could be approximated from the account of John the Baptist's birth, which was 6 months prior to the Lord's. In Luke 1:5, his father, Zechariah was said to be of the priestly course of Abijah, the 8th one ordered by David. It takes a bit of math to figure it out, but the upshot is it places Jesus' birth around early fall. For a more complete explanation, see truthinscripture.net

The other issue with regard to the date of the birth of the Savior was that no apostle brought it up to the churches they founded that they might celebrate it nor do they even bother to mention it. Over the centuries, churches added their own traditions outside of Scripture of which Christmas is one.
