GM, the key word here is automatically. Your email client should not automatically launch Word or Excel for these docs before you scan them. Some virus scans will run in an auto-mode. Hopefully, your email client will let this happen first.

I would set it up so that you have to manually open these docs. That way, you can be sure the email client won't interefere with the virus scan trying to do its job. Having an email client auto-launch Word as soon as it gets a Word doc is a sure-fire recipe for infecting your HD.

Wordpad won't initiate the macros which unleash the virus. The macros containing the virus are specific to Word (and sometimes Excel).
